Imagine being drunk from the moment you wake up until you go to bed and then the same thing all over again the next day. This Texan says that it is not what it is all cracked up to be. He brews beer in his belly and he has no control over it. He hasn't been sober for many years.
Once he went to a hospital in Texas to have himself checked up, stumbling, he told the doctors that he had not had anything to drink. The doctors just laughed at him for his alcohol limit is five times higher than normal. But after further testing, the doctors found out that he had been brewing alcohol in his belly
Barbara Cordell, the dean of nursing at Panola College in Texas, said: 'He would get drunk out of the blue.'
Mrs. Cordell met with gastroenterologist Dr. Justin McCarthy to do more testing. They put him in an isolated room in the hospital for 24 hours and was fed normal food and water.
After observation, the Texan man's blood alcohol level was still twice the limit.
Dr McCarthy found the alcohol was being produced by an ‘overabundance of brewer’s yeast’ - called saccharomyces cerevisiae - in the man’s stomach.
It effectively turned the patient’s stomach into a ‘brewery’ - getting him drunk when he ate something ‘starchy’, like bread, a bagel or pasta, as the yeast fermented the sugars into ethanol, which is pure alcohol.

The Texan is now on a low-carbohydrate diet and anti-fungal prescription to manage his blood alcohol level.
